Barbara Starfield (Brooklyn, Nueva York, 18 de diciembre de 1932 - † Menlo Park, California, 10 de junio de 2011) pediatra, maestría en salud pública y profesora universitaria. Impulsora de la Atención Primaria de Salud a nivel internacional. Prácticamente toda su vida académica y profesional ha estado ligada a la Universidad Johns Hopkins.
Biografía
Barbara Starfield estudió medicina entre 1954 y 1959 en la State University of New York obteniendo magna cum laude. Se especializó en pediatría entre 1959 y 1962 en The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Obtuvo el título de maestría en salud pública (Major in Epidemiology) en 1963 en The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.
Desde 1994 dirigía el Departamento de Política y Gestión Sanitaria de la Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health en Baltimore (Estados Unidos).1 Y desde 1996 era la co-directora de The Johns Hopkins Primary Care Policy Center (PCPC).
Se la considera como una de las más importantes investigadoras de la Atención Primaria de Salud, llegando a ser un referente internacional tanto por su doctrina académica como por sus numerosas publicaciones; sus libros se han traducido a varios idiomas. Miembro de numerosas sociedades científicas, asesora de un gran número de instituciones sanitarias oficiales internacionales y de varios países. Ha participado como miembro del comité editorial y revisora de artículos de numerosas revistas médicas de gran impacto internacional.
Desarrolló importantes herramientas metodológicas, como la Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCAT) una herramienta de evaluación de la Atención Primaria, la Child Health and Illness Profile (CHIP) para evaluar el estado de salud de los adolescentes y niños, y la Johns Hopkins Adjusted Clinical Groups (ACG) para la evaluación y diagnóstico del rango de morbilidad y grados de comorbilidad.
Fue co-fundadora y primer presidente de la Sociedad Internacional para la Equidad en Salud (International Society for Equity in Health) una organización científica dedicada a difundir el conocimiento sobre los determinantes de la inequidad en la salud y las formas de eliminarlas. Su trabajo se centra tanto en la calidad de la atención, la evaluación del estado de salud, evaluación de la atención primaria y la equidad en salud.
Estaba casada con el Dr. Neil A. Holtzman; tenía cuatro hijos (Robert, Jon, Steven, y Deborah) y ocho nietos.
